Pioneer Japan announced a new parcel shelf speaker that releases today, July 9th. The TS-X40 (40 for the 40th anniversary) combines a modern and more refined style while also giving a nod to the 1980s speakers that made them popular.

The speakers feature an illuminated Carrozzeria logo similar to the TS-X60, TS-X15II, but the more teal/blue coloring appears closer to the Lonesome Car-Boy II styling of the TS-X90 and TS-X66.

The parcel shelf speakers feature a 13 cm woofer, 5.7 cm midrange and a 1.7cm dome shaped tweeter. The double-slit port allows the speakers to achieves rich pass reproduction.

Installation is very similar to past units using a similar clamping bar that was seen 40 years ago. Wiring also is reminiscent to back then as well. Power for the illuminated logo will need to be tapped into a 12v source, like the running likes for your tail lights.

The size of the unit is fairly wide (321mm), making it somewhere between a TS-X15 and TS-X11 but also thinner (152mm) than almost all of their older parcel shelf speakers. The height of them are also on the smaller size, closer to the TS-X8.

Price wise they are very similar to their original yen price back in the 1980s. Overall a pretty well designed throwback that I am excited Pioneer released. They are now on sale where you can find them here on Pioneers website or from other retailers such as Yahoo Shopping. It doesn’t seem like there is any plans to bring the to the US, so you will need to use a proxy buyer to order them.
